Nordics or France: is climate enough to cut carbon?

Free cooling in Finland, nuclear in France: climate and power mix help — but PUE alone does not make credible green hosting.

Hébergeurs.eu Editorial Team 3 min read Updated Jul 19, 2026

CSR committee wants "move cloud to Finland for the cold". Ops reminds users are in France, latency rises, and Swiss Infomaniak already publishes fuller carbon report than "Nordic green" slide. Nordics vs France: climate helps PUE; it does not replace power mix, hardware, and code.

Nordic hosts (atNorth, Google Hamina, some Equinix offers) highlight free cooling. France (OVHcloud, Scaleway) highlights low-carbon mix and sovereign network. Both can greenwash — see PUE investigation and green marketing.

Moving 500 km north without measuring kg CO₂e avoided — and without counting egress — is CSR theatre.

Nordics: when cold matters

Batch compute latency-insensitive (rendering, offline ML). Client contractually requires Nordic datacenter. Host publishes verifiable PUE + mix + heat reuse.

France: when staying local is carbon-smart

FR/BE/CH users, latency and sovereignty. Documented national low-carbon mix. Providers with impact reports (Infomaniak ecology). Often better actions: reduce query CPU (cache, SQL), extend hardware lifespan, CDN + optimised images.

The climax: climate is a variable, not a strategy

Decide and move forward without blind spots

Require host carbon report, not slogan. Calculate latency and egress cost of north migration. Optimise application before geographic move. Compare PUE, mix, and scope 3 on same grid via directory and green marketing investigation.

Frequently asked questions

Are Nordic datacenters automatically greener?

Free cooling reduces auxiliary energy (low PUE). Total carbon depends on power mix, server utilisation, hardware scope 3, and app optimisation — not climate alone.

Is France carbon competitive?

Low-carbon power mix (nuclear + renewables) offsets less favourable free cooling climate. OVH Roubaix documents PUE ~1.1–1.3 by site — comparable to Nordics on paper.

Should we migrate to Finland for CSR?

Only if your file requires geographic proof AND host publishes full-scope carbon report. Otherwise optimising app at documented FR/CH host may beat long-distance migration.

How to compare two "green" hosts?

Dated PUE, documented renewable/nuclear share, GHG scope 1-2-3 report, heat reuse (ERE), server lifespan — not leaf logo.

Before choosing latitude, ask: how many kg CO₂e/year do we avoid — host figure, not brochure? Without answer, climate is decoration.
