Green hosting: signals that matter before the leaf logo

Green hosting, carbon neutrality, renewable energy—without PUE, carbon footprint, and hardware policy, the leaf logo proves nothing. A reading grid before you choose.

"100% green hosting." The line blooms on pricing pages—often without number, scope, or date. A CSR buyer who does not dig buys a label; one who requires a footprint compares two radically different offers under the same leaf logo.

Credible green hosting rests on measurable signals, not CTA button color. Before the logo, ask: PUE, energy, carbon, hardware—and what your application adds on top. Two hosts showing the same leaf can have opposite ecological trajectories: one publishes a dated scope 3 footprint, the other offsets without inventory.

Green marketing sells emotion; CSR audit sells traceability. Your job is turning the commercial promise into verifiable proof—before signing a multi-year contract or listing it in a sustainability report.

SignalQuestion to askWeak signal
PUEValue, period, measurement methodMissing or "industry leading" without number
Energy mix% renewable, guarantees of origin, local production"Green energy" without proof
Carbon footprintScope, year, tCO₂Offset only without inventory
HardwareLifespan, refurbishmentUndocumented constant refresh
Heat reuseERE, ERF, concrete projectsCooling alone celebrated

To dig into PUE, read PUE: reading this metric without overclaiming. For a documented case on the francophone market, Infomaniak ecology shows what a transparent actor publishes—and what your application adds anyway.

Greenwashing: recurring phrases to decode

Four formulations recur without attached proof:

  • "Carbon neutral" without public footprint or scope perimeter.
  • "100% renewable" via credits without detailed energy mix.
  • "Cold datacenter" (Nordic regions) without measured PUE—see Nordic data.
  • "200% offset" without own-emissions reduction trajectory.

A serious green host looks like an auditor: it shows what is included—and what is not.

Ask for the PDF before short-list. If the answer fits in one sales sentence, classify the offer as "to investigate"—not "green validated."

Infrastructure vs application: two distinct footprints

Even at the best host, your site adds consumption building PUE does not erase:

  • WordPress plugins, scheduled tasks, N+1 queries;
  • CDN, web fonts, analytics third parties;
  • Unoptimized video served without adapted compression.

Provider ecology does not replace product optimization. A renewable-powered datacenter does not compensate for a site loading twelve analytics scripts and uncompressed images. Both tracks advance in parallel: credible host and lean code.

Comparing two "green" offers without getting trapped

Five-step method:

  1. Download both actors' reports—not marketing extracts.
  2. Align scope (datacenter only vs full scope 3).
  3. Compare PUE in comparable climate if possible—a low PUE in Scandinavia is not comparable to one in a hot zone without context.
  4. Verify hardware policy: server lifespan, refurbishment, end of life.
  5. Test application performance—a slow site wastes CPU everywhere, green datacenter or not.

Use the directory and comparator on documented ecology criteria. For a concrete verification case, see Manitu green hosting.

The summit: the leaf rarely hides the numbers

Green marketing sells emotion; CSR audit sells traceability. Your credibility with an CSR client rests on proof you can produce—not your host's badge color.

Decide and move forward without blind spots

Before short-listing a "green" host:

  1. Set explicit thresholds: e.g. PUE below 1.3, public carbon footprint, documented renewable mix.
  2. Require reports before any decision—refuse comparing slogans without dated PDF.
  3. Map third parties outside host (CDN, analytics, fonts) adding footprint not covered by datacenter report.
  4. Optimize application in parallel—images, scripts, cache—so you do not waste infrastructure effort.
  5. Archive proof for your own CSR clients: attestation, date, scope, environment contact.

Frequently asked questions

What is a credible green host?

Measured PUE, documented energy mix, dated carbon footprint, published hardware policy—not "green" alone. Ask for PDF before short-list; missing dated document is the most reliable signal.

Is carbon neutrality enough?

No—scope, own-emissions reduction, and offset method matter. Offset without inventory or reduction trajectory does not hold in serious CSR audit.

Can my WordPress be green via the host?

Partly: host controls datacenter, you control code and third parties. See Infomaniak ecology for infra vs app gap.

Low PUE = green?

No—PUE measures building efficiency, not total footprint. Add renewable mix, ERE/ERF, and carbon footprint via the understanding PUE guide.

Next time a quote shows a leaf, ask for the footprint PDF. If it does not exist, it is not green hosting yet—it is decorative green.
