A developer compares two VPS quotes: €4 at Hetzner, €14 at a European rival. The decision looks obvious — until the first Friday-night incident with no monitoring, no runbook, and a support ticket asking for logs nobody knows how to extract.
Hetzner prices are real and documented (price score 9.4/10, A+ ecology). A useful investigation does not ask "is it reliable?" but "what operational work does the rate assume?"
What the price includes — and what it outsources
Hetzner sells raw compute: CPU, RAM, NVMe, generous bandwidth, datacenters in Germany and Finland. ISO 27001, 99.98% advertised uptime, excellent performance/price ratio.
What the low price usually does not include:
| Item | Hetzner | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Managed 24/7 support | Limited | You diagnose |
| Tested backups | Option / DIY | Data loss if forgotten |
| Monitoring/alerting | DIY | Client discovers incident |
| OS hardening | DIY | Larger attack surface |
| Account manager | No | No business escalation |
Hetzner is not "cheap" because it is worse. It is cheap because it does not bill what others bundle into managed offers.
Support: the first visible trade-off
Our Hetzner profile rates support at 6.8/10 — the profile's lowest point. Tickets work for clear infrastructure issues; they do not replace a network operations center calling your CTO when the database falls over.
Profiles that cope: DevOps team with on-call, early-stage SaaS, projects where internal hourly cost is controlled.
At-risk profiles: SMB with no Linux skills, e-commerce without an operations team, clients requiring SLA with contractual penalties. In those cases, paying more for managed VPS or platform hosting is often cheaper than the first unplanned outage.
Compare support response on a non-critical ticket before betting production on price alone. Hetzner excels when tickets are rare because your monitoring already caught the issue — not when tickets are your primary incident workflow.
Backups, snapshots and false security
Many teams assume "cloud = backed up". At Hetzner, you design the strategy: snapshots, external backup (S3, Backblaze), database replication.
Minimum checklist: daily automated off-server backup, quarterly restore test, internal RPO/RTO documentation.
A €4 VPS without tested backup can cost infinitely more than a €14 VPS with managed backup included.
Performance and density: the other side
Hetzner offsets limited support with excellent NVMe performance and very competitive dedicated servers. Some user feedback mentions high density on certain cloud nodes — varies by region and period.
Good practices: choose Nuremberg or Helsinki for audience latency, monitor steal time and I/O, plan CPU/RAM headroom for predictable peaks. Budget an external monitoring stack from day one — Uptime Kuma, Grafana Cloud, or a paid SaaS — because Hetzner will not call you when disk fills or MySQL stops responding.
Factor incident response into total cost: who is on call, who has root access, who owns backup restore drills. A €4 VPS with no runbook becomes expensive the first time a junior developer spends a Sunday rebuilding from an untested snapshot.
The peak: total cost exceeds the monthly invoice
That is the trade-off the pricing page does not highlight: you are your own managed service provider.
Decide and move forward without blind spots
Cost operations — monitoring, backups, patches — in hours per month. Test a restore before production. Compare over 36 months with a managed VPS if you have no operations team. Read Hetzner vs Anexia if the debate opposes service and price.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Hetzner so cheap?
Self-service model, large volume in Germany and Finland, efficient consolidation and low margin on support. You mainly pay for compute — not managed services or an account manager. The price assumes you bring operations skill or hire it separately.
Is Hetzner support enough for production?
For autonomous technical teams, often yes via ticket in English or German. For an SMB without a system administrator, no: support score 6.8/10 in our directory, with little business incident hand-holding. Production without internal ops needs a different category of host.
Are backups included?
Snapshots and backup options exist, often paid or limited. Never assume included point-in-time restore — configure and test your own backups off-server. Untested snapshots are wishful thinking, not a strategy.
Is Hetzner suitable for a first WordPress site?
Not recommended without server skills. There is no classic shared hosting: you install LAMP/LEMP, TLS, updates and monitoring yourself. Prefer French shared hosting if you want simplicity over raw compute price.
A €4 Hetzner VPS is not a good deal until you have answered one question: who restores what, and how fast?
