French hosts: proximity promise, infrastructure realities

HQ in Paris, datacenter in France — but offshore support, US transit, hybrid cloud? Decoding proximity promise vs actual technical chain.

Hébergeurs.eu Editorial Team 3 min read Updated Jul 19, 2026

"French host" reassures public buyers, agencies and SMEs: language, timezone, known legal framework. Yet behind the label coexist multi-region giants, shared resellers and qualified sovereign clouds — with very different technical chains.

Promised proximity plays out on three levels: where machines run, who answers at night, and which jurisdiction applies to your data copies.

Map: three "French" actor families

Francophone hyperscaler — OVHcloud. Datacenters in France and EU, range from shared to bare metal, HDS/SecNumCloud certifications on defined perimeters. Strong commercial proximity; high product complexity.

European dev cloud — Scaleway. Modern infrastructure positioning, EU regions, clear billing. Less beginner shared-hosting oriented.

SME shared — o2switch, LWS, PlanetHoster (FR offer). Simplicity, FR support, attractive price. Infrastructure often more opaque; verify datacenter and backups.

Commercial proximity ≠ end-to-end control

A French host can:

  • Lease capacity in a third-party datacenter;
  • Subcontract offshore L1 support;
  • Offer cheaper US region by default;
  • Display HDS on enterprise offer only.

The French flag in the footer describes the target market — not always the path of bits.

Pre-signature checklist

Production region locked in contract. Backup and replica location. Support language and level tested by ticket. HDS or SecNumCloud perimeter if required — on your offer, not a neighbouring range.

Public procurement and health publishers do not stop at "French host" slogan: they demand attestation, annexes and sometimes SecNumCloud on the right product. SME shared may suffice for a brochure site; not for a patient file — verify mapping before signature, not after the tender.

The peak: proximity is tested at 3 a.m.

Decide and move forward without blind spots

List priorities in real order: French support, datacenter in France, HDS or SecNumCloud certification, then price. For each finalist, ask in writing for production region, backup location and exact certification perimeter — not a generic marketing page. Test a technical support ticket before migration, ideally evening or weekend if client SLA requires it. Frequently asked questions

Does a French host necessarily host in France?

No. Some French resellers lease capacity abroad; other French actors also have EU or global regions. Registered office does not define data location.

Which French hosts are most visible on the market?

OVHcloud dominates with shared, VPS and cloud; Scaleway (Illiad group) targets dev cloud; smaller actors (o2switch, LWS, PlanetHoster FR) cover SME shared hosting.

Does French proximity bring support advantage?

Often yes for francophone SMEs: tickets, billing, familiar EU legal framework. Validate with ticket test, not slogan.

French host = guaranteed sovereignty?

No. Sovereignty reads on contractual scope, sub-processors, certifications (HDS, SecNumCloud) and architecture — not HQ address.
